A survey of Western thought about art from ancient times to the present, this volume covers the major periods of Western art history: Antiquity and the Middle Ages, the early modern period (Renaissance and Baroque), the Enlightenment, the 19th century, early 20th-century modernism, and postmodernism.

Presented chronologically, the subjects in this volume range from Impressionism in the nineteenth century to Earth Art, Sound Art, and Internet Art in the twenty-first.
