Bethel Library: Guidelines and Procedures

Circulation Guidelines

The purpose of circulation services is to allow students, faculty, alumni, and community users the ability to check out items in the Burroughs Learning Center’s collection, in order to facilitate the university-related research of Bethel University students, faculty, and staff.

Loan Period Information

Students, faculty, alumni, and community users may checkout library items if they meet the following requirements:

1. They have a current, valid Bethel University ID or community patron library card.

2. They have no outstanding library fines or overdue items.  

In addition, the following library circulation rules will also be enforced:

1. Number of items allowed to be checked out:

  • Students: 5 items at one time
  • Faculty: Unlimited
  • Community users and alumni: 3 books. No other items may be checked out. 

2. Course Reserve items

  • May only be used by current Bethel University students, faculty, and staff. 

3. Equipment Borrowing (laptop, camera, microphone, etc.)

  • Bethel University students, faculty, and staff may check out specified equipment with a valid Bethel University ID for academic purposes only. This ID will be held at the Information Desk until the equipment is returned.
  • Equipment is checked out on a first-come/first-serve basis.
  • Equipment may not be checkout by a user with fines or overdue materials.
  • The student will be required to pay for lost/damaged equipment.
  • Laptops are for in-building use only (1st or 2nd Floor of Burroughs Learning Center). 
  • If all laptops are being used, a waiting list will be maintained at the Information Desk.
  • The power cord must be returned with the laptop.
  • Laptops currently checked out can be renewed unless there is an active waitlist.
  • Laptop check-out will end one hour before the library closes. All equipment must be returned 30 minutes before closing. 
  • Checkout of the projector, camera, and webcam must be approved by the Library Dean.
  • Microphone check-outs will be only for students in Music programs and follow guidelines set by faculty.

4. Renewing

  • A library item may be renewed if it is brought to the Information Desk, along with the patron ID. If there is a hold request or library-related need, there may not be an option to renew a title.  

5. Holds

A patron may place a hold on an item if it is currently checked out. The Library will notify the patron once the item is available. The library staff is not able to guarantee a timeframe for when the item will be available.

The Library reserves the right to recall any titles identified as needing additional access, course reserves, or other related items. These approvals are made by the Library Dean. 

Books

  • Students: 30 days
  • Faculty: One semester
  • Community/Alumni: 14 days

DVDs

  • Students: 7 days
  • Faculty: one semester
  • Community/Alumni: may not check-out DVDs or Course Reserve items

Course Reserve-determined by university professor

  • In-Library Use Only: may not leave the library. The student's ID will be held at the information desk until the item is returned.
  • Overnight Loan: must be returned the next day.
  • 3 Day Loan: must be returned within 3 days. 

 

An item is considered overdue at midnight on the date it is due. 

All items are required to be returned by the assigned due date. Courtesy reminder emails will be sent by the Bethel Campus Library.

If there is no response and the items are not returned within six months, then the items will be considered lost. The patron will lose all borrowing privileges until the items are returned or an exact replacement of the item is provided to the library.

If a patron develops a pattern of stealing, losing, or damaging library materials. The library reserves the right to suspend or cancel its ability to check out library items. The library also reserves the right to refuse circulation services to patrons not following the library's conduct guidelines. 

The Bethel University Library's print collection is available to distance and online students. The print catalog can be searched here

Borrowers must be current Bethel University students. Standard borrowing times will apply as outlined for print resources.

The Library can deliver titles to the Paris Campus and mail select items to student residences. To submit a Distance Student Materials Request, please click here

If we are unable to fulfill a request due to the type of material or cost, the library will reach out with additional options.
