Bethel Library: Guidelines and Procedures

Guidelines

The Burroughs Learning Center Library welcomes alumni and community patrons.  Alumni and community patrons must have a Burroughs Learning Center Library card. Patrons will have the ability to use available onsite resources and may borrow books only.  The Burroughs Learning Center Library is not a public library; we only allow the public to use this facility.

To use the Burroughs Learning Center Library patrons must obtain a Library card. Patrons will need to complete the Community Patron Contract, provide a valid ID and proof of address, and complete the registration process, and live within an adjoining county.

  • Utility Bill: Electric, Gas, Water
  • Cable, Internet, Telephone Bill

Once the Community Patron Contract is complete, a member of the Library Staff will check the patrons’ names against the sex offender registry, https://sor.tbi.tn.gov/home. If the patrons' name is on the sex offender registry, the Library Staff will call Security; the person will not be allowed to complete the registration process and will be removed from the Bethel University campus by Security.

Due to increased supply costs, the Bethel University Library is only able to offer Community Members limited printing support through standard printing on regular printing pager size 8x11. The cost is $0.05 per page for black and white copies on 8x11 and $0.10 per page for color copies.

The library is not able to offer card stock, vinyl or other printing services as these are reserved for Bethel University projects. The Library is not able to offer printing or use of resources for personal or commercial purposes.

The Library is not able to offer document scanning or faxing.

  1. Sign in and out each time the patron visits the Library.  The handwriting must be legible!
  2. Patrons must have a library card and register at the front desk to be in the building, use computers, or check out books.
  3. Community patrons must submit a completed registration form along with a valid ID or proof of address. Example of valid ID:  Current driver’s license, ID card, Passport, voter’s card, or a bill stating proof of address. The patron must live in an adjoining county.
  4. Patrons may borrow a maximum of three (3) books if they are in good standing with the library and have no unpaid fines.  Checkouts are limited to books only.
  5. Patrons are responsible for the cost of replacing lost and damaged materials plus shipping & handling.
  6. Watching Videos:  A Headset or earbuds must be worn, keep the volume low as not to disturb others around you.
  7. Community hours are Mon-Thur 3:00-6:00, Fri. 3:00-4:30  There are not any weekend hours. 
  8. All cell phone conversations must be carried outside.  All ringers must be turned off before entering the library. No Skyping, FaceTime, or multimedia conversations are allowed in the library.
  9. University resources are intended to be used for instructional purposes and may not be used for private gain.
  10. The use of the library is prohibited during midterms, finals week, and peak periods of student use.  Closing for community patrons is one week before and the week of midterms and finals.
  11. Access to the basement is for restroom use only, no loitering in the basement area.
  12. All general library rules which apply to students also apply to community users.
  1. No sexually explicit images, advocacy of violence, illegal activities, or any such websites may be accessed.  NO EXCEPTIONS!  IMMEDIATE REMOVAL FROM CAMPUS WILL BE THE RESULT and the TERMINATION OF LIBRARY USE!                                                                                               
  2. Patrons may use the computers for a maximum period of one hour. If a computer is not available community MUST WAIT until one is available.
  3. Faculty, students, and staff have priority access to all computers. If a computer is not available to them, community users and other individuals who are not using computers for academic purposes will be asked to relinquish their computers.
  4. All computers are monitored and visible to the library staff at all times.
  5. Patrons are limited to a single hour per day use of computers; each additional hour is $5.00. Extended time is allowed at no charge for students working on school assignments.  Student IDs or proof of enrollment are required.
  6. Black and white printed/copied pages are 5 cents each, Color printed/copied pages are 10 cents if you bring your paper the price remains the same.
  7. Community patrons are allowed no more than 20 color or black and white printed/copied pages.
  8. We do not scan papers to email or fax for community patrons.
  9. Study group rooms are for students and not intended for community users.
  10. The Library Public Computer Use Policy is to be observed in conjunction with all existing policies and procedures of Bethel University.
  11. There are no interlibrary loan privileges for Community patrons. 

Note-The Library Staff reserves the right to: 

  1. Recall any books on loan to be turned in immediately
  2. To remove any patron conducting themselves in an unacceptable manner
  3. An unacceptable manner is determined by the library staff

All rules and regulations are set by Bethel University and are subject to change.                                                                 

We expect complete cooperation when asked to observe these rules.
