Bethel's Quality Enhancement Plan

Definition of Writing Enrichment Class

The Definition of a Writing Enrichment Version of a Course

Bethel's definition of a WE version of a course is modeled after the definitions of writing intensive courses published by the University of Missouri Writing Program (since 1984), The Writing Center University of Wisconsin Madison (since 1969), and scholarly works providing guidelines for developing effective writing programs published by Townsend, M. (2001) and Farris, C. & Smith, R. (2000).

In order for a version of a course to be designated WE it must satisfy the following conditions.

Writing Requirement

  1. There are at least four writing assignments that are distributed throughout the course.
  2. There is a minimum of 4,000 words (about 15 pages double spaced, 12 pt. Arial) of written work assigned throughout the course.
  3. One of the four written products may be a draft, which is revised, rewritten, and submitted as a second of the four written products.
  4. One assignment (not a draft) containing a minimum of 1,000 words will be submitted as data for QEP assessment.

Writing Assessment

  1. Rubrics are to be used in evaluating student work and students are to be familiarized with the writing rubrics used to assess their writing.
  2. Bethel's QEP Writing Rubric is to be used in evaluating the assignment to be submitted as data for QEP assessment.

Writing Instruction

  1. A portion of the course activities are to be devoted to relevant instruction in writing that covers selected topics that are included in the QEP Student Learning Outcome statements listed in the Student Learning Outcomes.
  2. Students are to receive feedback as to the quality of their written work.

The class instructor is WE certified by the Writing Enrichment Review Committee
